Education system handicapped for the ‘special children’ in IndiaEvery child needs and deserves good living conditions. Education is one of the most required entities to survive on. School is like a second home. What if the second home treats you like a stranger? What if it treats you like an unwanted piece of non-existence? In many schools, this is the bare reality. Our system of education is now limited to the arenas of intelligence and good appearance. Any handicap, be it mental or physical restricts a child from merging into the mainstream. Why is it so? I am a volunteer with CRY and have been through the case studies of such children. They do not know what to expect from their adults for they do nothing but separate them from others.

It is funny but our government has made rules regarding the inclusion of these handicapped children. The children can study in normal schools and do not need to go to special schools. These children are often neglected and not provided with required help. When asked about the same, the authorities trail off by dismissing them as “special children” who need to go to special schools. But the reality is that these special schools are often very expensive. A social organization or a NGO might not be able to provide the appropriate education needed. They might provide some vocational training. The government has thought of making ramps in schools but the question is that-is the society ready to accept the intermingling of them with the other children? It is time we think for them and think with our hearts and not our minds.

Forget the education system for 'special children', you cannot find a well-established chain of government schools in rural part of the country. The education system in India is lagging behind and its performance is poor than schools in other neighbouring countries.

Congratulations to you for working for the cause of such special children with CRY. This is also a fact that common Indians don't know the name of such organisations, other than CRY, involved in such kind of social work. The government has no time to invest in these problems. NGOs are the only hope.

Malnourishment of pregnant mothers, premature babies and growing kids is one of the main cause of this problem. Awareness drive is the best way to control it. Than only the role of government comes in light - to take care of special children.

Agreed with Swati..half of all young children in India are malnourished. It happens because Women hardly take care of her own health even in pregnancy days. This is the problem with dire consequences for morbidity, mortality, productivity and economic growth of the country.

Educating special children is a tough work but it is necessary to train them as they can live their life with respect like other normal children. It is the duty of government to provide such kids better environment to grow.

Normal children can fulfill their needs by their own because they can develop their skills. Special children can't show normal signs to you so, you will have to show extra care to them. They need extra help and we should give them the extra care to make them feel normal.

Things get really ugly if they try to seek admission in engineering colleges, because in some cases the applicants aren’t supposed to be physically challenged. I fail to understand the rationale behind this as the applicants who meet the physical requirements at the time of admission can, by the hand of fate, also become physically challenged. Then what?

Problems start when special kids go to a mainstream school. Teachers cannot single some of them out of other students. Mainstream schools and teachers in such schools cannot handle such special kids and these children cannot survive without adult supervision.

You can count the number of schools opened for special kids on your fingers. The major question is that where will they go? What will their parents do? There is need to start an intervention program to help them. Children with impaired communication and social abilities are in urgent need of special schools.

Only a special educator can help teachers to understand how can he adjust a special child in a class of normal children. They can learn it from regular interactive sessions, workshops and training. To show a flexible attitude while teaching special children is an art.

Categorizing them as ’special’ simply assert that they are not the part of the mainstream. This mentality should be changed in order to guarantee their oneness with all of us. Definitely, they should be provided education in normal schools to ensure their all round development.

@everyone

I agree that special children need care and extra attention. What is alarming that physically handicapped children are also categorized as special. Is it fair? According to govt rules, schools should have elevator or ramps for children with wheelchairs to move freely. No school follows this. And sadly, the govt doesn’t either.
