India, Cambodia and Thailand - Sex tourism hubs
Sex tourism is a very lucrative industry in the modern global world. Sex tourists are individuals who travel to foreign countries to engage in sexual activity with children or females. According to Juan Miguel Petit, the UN special rapporteur on the rights of children, India, Cambodia and Thailand are the growing sex tourism spots in the world. He also says that the government is not doing enough to protect the children from such a horrid crime.

He explains the situation as a total neglect on the part of the government for financial benefits. The sex tourists are often very rich and pay hefty amounts for the same. The policemen also play a dormant role in this scenario. The pressure of money minting from sex tourists is what is keeping the government so passive about this issue. For him, Asia continues to be the growing sex tourism spot in the world. He condemns this act as an “insane tourism” and touches upon the plight of the young girls by mentioning correctly that money is what leads them towards such a brutal exploitation.

Notwithstanding his remark, I personally feel that just dismissing something as insane and unnecessary would not help elevate the situation. The UN can dismiss an act as heinous but would it actually look after the income of these girls? Prostitution is a growing industry in Asia because of the backward economic condition of the countries. Furthermore, it is not solely the responsibility of any government to put a check on these issues. The citizens and the people who exploit these girls should also understand their mistakes. A government is a very broad term to be addressed to. It can function properly only if it has the desired support. If people stop “buying” sex, the sellers will have to stop selling them. This is a vicious circle and cannot be broken easily. Only slow and steady knowledge building can help eradicate this severely widespread disease.

Prostitution is the oldest industry in the world. Even a prostitution racket has brought down the political future of Spitzer, the New York Governor in the U.S. One cannot avoid these sex jaunts. The need of the hour is to have safe sex in these unauthorised brothels.

There is nothing new about Thailand being the sex tourism capital of the world. Though prostitution is illegal in Thailand, the government turns a blind eye into the flourishing trade mainly because of two reasons:

a) To keep foreign cash coming in through tourism, which is the major source of Thailand's income
b) There is a kind of unwritten agreement between the Thai officials that underage girls are not exploited and information on drug runners and peddlers are given to the police from time to time.

In Thailand, finding minor girls in Bangkok's red light district is extremely rare. They are found in private homes and the pimps are always there to lead the tourists there. There is where the main corruption takes place. 50% of them are caught and punished while 50% of the caught are let off the hook in exchange of bribe.

The anti-drug drive in Thailand has been by and large successful and a lot of success goes to the prostitute runners who have first hand information about street drug peddlers who lead to the source of drugs.

Cambodia and Vietnam are the worst countries when it comes to trafficking of minor girls. Please read this post here and you would know the extent of the tragedy.

Sri Lanka is also a pedophile's paradise. But minor girls are not trafficked there as much as minor boys are. The industry there is different from Cambodia. Here forced prostitution is much lower. Nonetheless, the crime is the same.

It is a worldwide problem. Eastern European girls end up in west Europe as sex slaves who are lured there for legitimate work. Girls from Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Georgia etc and even Russia end up as sex slaves there.

In Cambodia too the situation has arisen because of long war with Khmer Rouge that destroyed social and family fabric in the country. Now the mafia has taken over. At least, in Vietnam sex with minors amounts to statutory rape punishable by death by firing squad. But the Vietnamese government is a strong government unlike the Cambodian government.

In Amsterdam you will find girls as young as 12 walking the streets selling themselves. In brothel districts on Amsterdam nothing is impossible. The prostitution mafia is so strong that it has kept the illegal part of the trade running which is involving minors. There is however a difference between Cambodia and Holland. Minor girls are not forced into the trade directly. They are being cultivated by drug peddlers and once they get dependent upon drugs they have no choice. Selling sex is the easiest way to earn a few quick bucks.

There are millions of minors into sex trade in India and they are not in major cities. They are in sleepy towns that fall on the national highways where truckers traditionally rest for the night. There you can find girls as young as 8 soliciting clients.

I read this article some 3 years back. I was too shocked to react after reading the post and seeing the image.

I did some search and found this. See if it stirs your soul up or not. Look at expression on the girl’s face there.

I am just shocked to see the extent of this grave problem. it is time people stop exploiting children at least. It is not the fault of the children that their elders probe them down to prostitution. This is another story which I have witnessed. Please read it.
