Why do we always assume Pakistan to be our immediate enemy? Why do we always think that the nation which is embittered by our own nation is Pakistan? Is it because we still cannot accept the loss of property and lives due to Jinnah’s decision of partition or is it because of Bhutto’s statement,”Pakistan and India were never one country, they were only kept together by force whether by Mauryan, Moghall or British rule” to Paris based reporter Francois Gautier(editor-in-chief of Paris based daily La Revue de I’inde)? Why is it that this mutual hatred or disparity is equal?

Geelani, leader from the Indian controlled part of Jammu and Kashmir said this Sunday that while he wanted a stable Pakistan, he wanted an equal level of stability in India. For him, Kashmir issue is the main “hurdle” and needs to be resolved soon. He has completely boycotted the elections under the Indian constitution and has planned a severe door-to-door campaigning for the Kashmiris to boycott the same.

For him, India has neglected and wrong policies for Kashmir. He says that he doesn’t hold any grudges against the Indians. Is it really so? I force myself to ask this question. He wishes that Pakistan and India both remain peaceful and stable. Isn’t it impossible? A situation where two nations are in constant conflict cannot be peaceful at the same time. A confession which shocks me is that he has stood against any wrong policy of Pakistan.

I do not want to interfere or discuss about politics and government but I want to ask this question to myself and all others that what went wrong between Pakistan and India. Any topic involving the two nations attract instant debates and arguments. Nobody thinks about the poor Kashmiris who are living under such a vulnerable situation. Nobody thinks of the future. I begin to lose faith in humanity when I see disputes like these fueling up. If civilization meant snatching away eachothers’ lands and rights, I refuse to be civilized. If civilization means becoming stone-hearted and emotionless, I refuse to be civilized. Talks and talks are what our leaders are full of. Sadly, truth and implementation of something right is now endangered and will soon be extinct.

More than the present status-quo of the Indo-Pak relations, our inevitable and operating at a subliminal consciousness level resentment is a product of a long-standing history of negative conditioning. Who would not want peace, except some? We do and shall always will, but to congregate India and Pakistan into one is an option that sends us back to the bloodbath during partition. Over the years, both have established a political and cultural personality of their own and they are like a set of siamese twins that once separated should be left alone to assume their own individualities and find their own place in the world.

The problem is that individuality loses its face with the onset of Kashmir issue. It is hard to admit but nonetheless, these two nations are not mature or ready yet to find their own individuality when it comes to Kashmir.

The problem is that the siblings can be best friends or worst enemies. Two countries, out of devision of Indian sub-continent came into existence in the wake of mutual hatred for each other. Never before in the history migration of population or you say exodus of one community from a region and vice versa took place as it happened in the case of partition way back in 1947. After half-century of partition, some arm-chaired politicians in both the countries raised the bogey of Indo-Pak unity. However, in northern parts of the country, it merely remained a demand for unity between two Punjabs, the Punjab in India and the Punjab in Pakistan. These Indo-Pak amity committee, spring up like mushrooms on either side of the border never took the case of other communities, in particular the ’Mahajirs’ (those who migrated from India to Pakistan). In the absence of honesty, such attempt remains merely rhetoric.

This is the heart-breaking reality. Majority of Indians and Pakistanis do not ”hate” the other. There is simply a story of hatred which is sometimes truly fictitious. I wonder when some light would incur on our relationships and when it would turn out to be better and stable

Politicians won’t let it happen, it’s one of the main issues that help them bag votes, no matter what country we are talking about.

And I don;t think that any country would like to back off from the Kashmir issue and unless that happens I don’t see why and how peace can prevail
